Related Organizations

The official outreach arm of the diocese is Episcopal Charities, which provides funding and support to a broad range of parish-based human services throughout the diocese.

A number of organizations of different types operate within the diocese that either owe their origins to it and are now separate but connected entities, or are separately founded Episcopal organizations that maintain links with us.  These include:

Seamen’s Church Institute

Founded in 1834 in affiliation with the Episcopal Church, the Seamen’s Church Institute of New York & New Jersey (SCI) is the largest, most comprehensive mariners’ agency in North America. Its chaplains visit 3,400 vessels in the Port of New York and New Jersey and along 2,200 miles of America’s inland waterways annually. SCI’s maritime education facilities provide navigational training to nearly 1,600 mariners each year through simulator-based facilities located in Houston, Texas,, and Paducah, Ky. The SCI and its maritime attorneys are recognized as leading advocates for merchant mariners by the federal Government, including Congress, the Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the United Nations, the International Maritime Organization, the International Labor organization and maritime trade associations.

Episcopal Social Services, Inc.

Founded in 1831 as the Protestant Episcopal City Mission Society, Episcopal Social Services (ESS) has a long history of secular service in New York. Over the course of its 175-year history, it has served a vast range of people in need. Today ESS focuses on strengthening children, families and adults through programs in foster care and adoption, early childhood education, after-school programs, group homes for developmentally disabled adults and community re-integration of the formerly-incarcerated. Pairing private donations with public funding, ESS delivers enhanced services that help people make new beginnings, not just weather crises. Each of ESS’s programs involves a successful partnership or collaboration with public schools, child welfare agencies or local community service providers to bring about change and improvement in the lives of New York’s City’s most vulnerable citizens.
