A public spiritual space for truth telling about the black experience in our diocese

In our Diocese, some churches were built by enslaved persons. Was yours? Did your church baptize, marry, confirm or bury enslaved or free people of color? Was your church always segregated? Always integrated? Has your parish population changed as the neighborhood changes? How did your church participate in the Civil Rights Movement … if it did? Today, is your church confronting white supremacy?

Have you already started to explore stories about the black presence in your church? Do you have documentation about this history? Do the elders of your parish have memories and information to share?

Information, stories, sketches … and questions … about the black presence in your church will add to the overall portrait of people of African descent in the Diocese of New York.
