Bishop’s Crosses
Ana Hernandez (Presented via Zoom)
St. Augustine famously wrote that when we sing, we pray twice. Ana Hernandez’s music helped countless people to pray and to find a joyful Spirit of God in their lives.
Her music has embodied the baptismal ministry of the laity, which she found through the writings of theologian Verna Dozier.
After college Ana moved to New York City where she found her way to the choirs and churches of the Diocese of New York. With her singing partner, she formed the group the Miserable Offenders to give new expressions to traditional hymnody.
Since then, she’s sung all over the world — including under the direction of Leonard Bernstein as a member of New York Choral Artists— and recorded and produced albums of her own music. In 2004 she also published her own book, The Sacred Art of Chant: Preparing to Practice, to open the practice of chanting as a part of our spiritual lives.
She leads workshops and retreats across The Episcopal Church to encourage everyone to find their voice. She has been a leader and partner to help us find deep and dynamic ways to sing together, including serving on the General Convention’s Standing Committee for Liturgy and Music. In 2005, she received an honorary doctorate from Episcopal Divinity School.
In recent years, Ana has become a songleader and the musicologist for the Poor People’s Campaign by marching, leading protests, and writing chants.
Therefore, in recognition of her offering as a musician, composer, activist song leader, writer, and self-professed freelance mischief maker we, on the 9th day of November 2024, in the second year of our consecration, do award her
THE BISHOP’S CROSS
The Rev. Canon James Callaway
Our global Anglican Communion is tied together by “bonds of affection” through partnerships and deep relationships. Jamie Callaway’s ministry has strengthened these bonds more than nearly anyone in our history.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Jamie came to New York to attend The General Theological Seminary. He was ordained at St. Mary’s Manhattanville and began his ministry at two congregations in New Jersey.
In 1980, he was called to serve at Trinity Church on Wall Street. In three decades at Trinity, Jamie embodied the call of our baptismal covenant to seek and serve Christ in all people. He supported leaders and nurtured relationships all over the world, with a long focus on Africa. Through his stewardship of the Trinity Grants Program he helped develop communication systems so that bishops and primates of the Anglican church in Africa could connect and collaborate. He worked with Archbishop Desmond Tutu to support the church in Southern Africa in its fight against apartheid.
He helped create St. Margaret’s House in lower Manhattan as housing for seniors. On September 11, 2001 his care ensured the children of Trinity Preschool found safety through the tumult and uncertainty of the attacks on the World Trade Center.
After Trinity he served for a decade as general secretary of the Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion, supporting Anglican institutions of higher education across the globe.
Most of all, Jamie is a caring and beloved pastor. Through his entire ministry, with people all over the world, he has shown a sixth sense for the souls who needed care.
Therefore, in recognition of his gift for partnership and care for our global Anglican Communion we, on the 9th day of November 2024, in the second year of our consecration, do award him
