The Rt. Rev. Allen K. Shin was elected Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of New York on December 7, 2013, and consecrated at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine on May 17, 2014.

Born in South Korea, Bishop Shin moved with his family to Washington, D.C., in 1972. He attended Gonzaga College High School, a Jesuit school for boys, and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Eastern Michigan University in 1983. After working for several years as a professional singer in New York City, he became a choir director at a Korean Episcopal church in Chicago, where he began the discernment process for ordained ministry.

He earned his Master of Divinity from the General Theological Seminary in New York City in 1996. That year, he was ordained a deacon in the Diocese of Chicago and a priest in the Diocese of New York. He was called as Curate/Assistant at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Manhattan, where he served until 2001. During that time, he also served as Assistant Officer for Episcopal Asiamerica Ministry at the Episcopal Church Center.

In 2001, Bishop Shin received a Master of Sacred Theology from General Seminary, then pursued postgraduate studies in Patristics at the University of Oxford from 2002 to 2005. While in England, he served as Honorary Assistant Priest at All Saints Church, Margaret Street, London. From 2005 to 2010, he served as a Fellow and Chaplain of Keble College, Oxford.

In 2010, he returned to the United States to become Rector of St. John’s Church in Huntington, New York, in the Diocese of Long Island, where he served until his election as Bishop Suffragan.

Bishop Shin brings to his episcopal ministry a deep commitment to theological scholarship, cross-cultural ministry, and the global Anglican tradition.
