An Open Letter from the Episcopal Diocese of
New York on Recent Immigration Disruptions
“In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.” –Luke 2:1
We are a City and Nation formed by immigrants. Our faith recognizes every person as created in the image and likeness of God and carries an inviolable human dignity.
- The “pause” on asylum decisions and “permanent pause” on migration from “third world” countries signal a larger plan to end immigration in America.
- The firing of more than 100 immigration court judges attempts to transform immigration court into an instrument for mass deportation.
- The termination of employment authorization and benefits for migrants pursuing legal status is designed to make daily life in the United States so harsh that many will abandon hope of safety or opportunity.
- The harassment and detention of immigrants who appear for routine court hearings disregards established law and injects fear and disorder into a system meant to offer due process.
These actions mock our civic tradition and betray our faith. The unfolding policies broadcast shameful racism and undermine the moral fabric of our common life.
We reject policies designed for exclusion, a culture rooted in fear, and a faith mired in nationalism.
We choose a different way. We are committed to keeping our neighbors safe. We will continue to practice an open-hearted faith, to stand with those who are vulnerable, and work for communities that recognize the dignity of every person.
Grace & Peace,

The Rt. Rev. Matthew Heyd
Bishop of New York
