Our Companion Diocese: Central Tanganyika
Since 2006, the Episcopal Diocese of New York has shared a growing partnership with the Diocese of Central Tanganyika (DCT) in the Anglican Church of Tanzania. This companion relationship is rooted in mutual prayer, deep connection, and shared mission across cultures and continents.

What Is a Companion Diocese?
A companion relationship is more than a formal agreement—it’s a living expression of our call to walk together in Christ’s love. Each partner encourages the other through friendship, spiritual support, and shared resources. Our relationship with DCT reminds us that we belong to something bigger: a global church united in compassion and hope.
From Carpenter’s Kids to Shared Mission
Our journey began with the Carpenter’s Kids Program, which connected over half of our parishes with villages in DCT to support vulnerable children’s education. These weren’t just financial partnerships; they were friendships shaped by letters, visits, prayers, and lives changed by love.
A Renewed Vision
In 2017, with the blessing of Bishops Andrew Dietsche and Mary D. Glasspool, and under the leadership of Bishop Dickson Chilongani of DCT, our partnership entered a new chapter. Together, we now focus on sustainable development goals that include:
- Food security and sustainable agriculture
- Education and empowerment—especially for marginalized communities
- Health, climate action, and economic opportunity
These priorities are guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and shaped annually in conversation with DCT leaders.
Ongoing Partnership
Led by The Rev. Robin Newman and the Tanganyika Task Force (TTF), our Diocese supports micro-investment programs, education for the deaf, and long-term development initiatives, all funded through our diocesan Global Mission budget.
