The Sustainable Development Fund
For the past fifteen years the Millennium Development Goals have provided a framework which has helped to shape The Episcopal Church’s approach to global partnership. Building on the success of the MDGs, the United Nations has now developed seventeen Sustainable Development Goals to bring focus to global development work over the next fifteen years. For more than 35 years, many developed nations have committed 0.7% of their gross domestic product to sustainable development in poor countries. With additional broad support from many religious communities, foundations and other donors, tremendous progress has been made in reducing extreme poverty. Still more needs to be done. Last summer, in anticipation of the announcement of the new Sustainable Development Goals. General Convention voted to continue its budgetary commitment of 0.7% annually toward international development programs, and encouraged dioceses and congregations to do the same. With this in mind, our diocese has established the Sustainable Development Fund, with seed money from the 2016 diocesan budget and the Global Mission Commission, which will be a resource for furthering sustainable growth and development among our partners around the world. The Global Mission Commission soon will announce the guidelines and application process for these grants. Any congregation, school or mission network of our diocese may apply. I encourage each congregation to direct 0.7% of your annual budget to this work of sustainable development, either directly with your global partners or through a contribution to the Sustainable Development Fund of the Diocese of New York.
