Pastoral Missioner to The Deaf

The Pastoral Missioner serves the Diocese and its congregations, our parishes, hospitals and chaplains, and other ministry settings as a pastoral caregiver to people who are deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing, blind, or experiencing any combination of sensory loss. The Pastoral Missioner is also a liaison and ministerial support, on behalf of the Bishop, with other Episcopal ministries to the Deaf throughout the Diocese and nationwide. Through the office of the Canon for Pastoral Care, the Pastoral Missioner can provide direct services, support services, and consultation in the following areas:

  • Consulting and educating congregations on how to welcome and serve people who are Deaf, through workshops, trainings, and educational materials, including establishing new, accessible worship places for people who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing
  • Information and guidelines for working with or hiring ASL interpreters
  • On-call Chaplain for pastoral ministry to people who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing, both clergy and lay, and in situations of both immediacy and ongoing pastoral care
  • Working with congregations, hospitals, hospices, and in other ministry settings to strengthen pastoral ministry to the Deaf
  • Outreach to institutions and civic associations, such as schools and social organizations, to explore and serve the spiritual needs of their communities
