Grace Church 125th Anniversary of the Choir
Fri, April 26, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
On Friday, April 26, Greenwich Village’s Grace Church parish will celebrate the 125 anniversary of its historic choir with a free concert. Honoring over a century of exuberant music making and worship, the performance will feature current choristers, who range from students to professional musicians, as well as alumni members. Starting at 7PM in Grace Church (802 Broadway), the one-hour event is open to the public and will include compositions by Randall Thompson, Barry Rose, and Leonard Bernstein.
A ticketed fundraiser is set to immediately follow at 8PM, held at the adjoining Grace Church School (86 Fourth Avenue). The goal of the reception is to raise funds to restore the carved oak choir pews, which have been in use since 1902 and are in dire need of revitalization. “What we propose to accomplish is a complete restoration of the chancel furniture, in which every piece is strengthened, cleaned, and returned to its original color and glory,” explains Reverand J. Donald Waring, Rector.
Grace Church Choir of Men and Boys is the oldest boy choir in continuous service in New York City. Grace’s choir school began in 1894 with sixteen boys and served as a model for other institutions throughout New York. It later evolved into Grace Church School, which today provides instruction for over 700 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. In 1994, the Girls’ Choir was established at Grace Church. Today, 72 boys and girls sing in the Combined Choirs of Grace Church.
