Workshop on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (Manhattan)
Thu, October 10, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
A One-Day Workshop for Clergy and Lay Leaders
The Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Task Force aims to inform and equip our lay and ordained leaders with tools to better respond to parishioners experiencing domestic violence and/or sexual assault, i.e. interpersonal violence in all its forms, seeking refuge, support and empowerment towards choices of safe and abundant living. We will offer a safe space to discuss the challenging realities of issues of power and control as part of all relationships in parishes, families, communities, the workplace, and the world. Examples include issues of bullying, harassment, inappropriate behaviors, and assaults. These challenges of child abuse, dating abuse, internet abuse, partner abuse, incest and sexual assaults including rape, elder abuse and animal abuse. They exist from cradle to grave affecting all categories of social, economic, racial, gender, profession, cultural and national identifiers.
Another goal is to work towards prevention of abuse by examining our own assumptions and expectations of what creates a safe and empowering relationship and/or community, encouraging reflection upon what comprises a healthy relationship especially through the lens of gospel living and what is – and what isn’t – love.
A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. The workshop is free, but registration is required. Space is limited.
